GRACE KATZENSTEIN
Rather than give you a resume of dates, places, schools, exhibits, etc., I’d rather share what creating my art is like for me.
I make my first stroke of pen, or brush to paper. A rich red or maybe orange illuminates the page. It’s juicy! The paper is no longer paper. It’s giving birth to a piece of me. I feel excited, curious, happy. Stroke after stroke, line, shadow, color after color, I deliver my latest art-child. Just as I am passionate about my husband, children, and grandchildren, I am passionate about my art.
A portrait is not only a collection of lines, shadows, and features. Each drawing of a person has its own unique expression. Part of drawing people is intuit what they’re feeling, who they uniquely are. A portrait should reflect an artist’s empathy. This is really true for all my art. A large dose of me can be seen in each piece I do.
